Rutgers Career Planning Office advises you google yourself as part of your job search preparation.

Have you Googled yourself lately?

gooWhile most legal employers still recruit and hire the “old fashioned” way, with resume and cover letter, there will come a time in the process when they will search for a candidate’s presence online. What impression will an employer get when they search for you?

Megan Kristel reminds us in a New Jersey Law Journal article called “Take Control of your Online Image to Make the Best First Impression” that your online image is like an electronic business card. She outlines a few steps to take to make the most of your online image in your job search.

Google yourself. Everyone else is doing it. Find out what is being said about you and your company. Is your message obvious?  Be critical; would you hire yourself? Bring in an objective opinion to hear the full truth.

Edit yourself. If you participate in the dialogue of social networking by updating your statuses, keep it positive….. No negative talk, cursing or discussing what you had for dinner — no one cares.
